2.Chelsea Filter

:

An essential device in identifying colored stones. While it was originally intended to rapidly differentiate between genuine Emeralds and the pastes and doublets which resemble them, it also is a valuable aid in identifying other colored stones, as well. Designed to transmit only deep red and yellow-green light, and the best results are obtained when stones are examined under a strong electric light. Just hold the filter close to the eye with the stone or stones (for a number of stones can be examined at one time) receiving as much light as possible. Under these conditions, Emeralds (absorbing in the yellow green) usually appear distinctly red or pinkish in colour, the actual tint varying from merely pinkish in the case of pale stones, to a rich almost ruby red for better coloured specimens. On the other hand, most imitations of the genuine stone (pastes, doublets, soude Emeralds) retain a green appearance. A helpful tool in identifying certain red, blue and green stones.

    Great bundle for the price

Posted by Chris Walker on 4th Apr 2026

Considering that you get multiple filters in one package, this feels like a very good value, especially compared to buying them individually, and for anyone building out a basic gem testing kit, this is a very affordable way to add another layer of testing capability without spending a lot of money on advanced equipment.

    Simple concept but very effective

Posted by Carlos Mendoza on 4th Apr 2026

At first I didn’t expect much because the filters seem so simple, but after using them, I realized how effective they are at highlighting differences between stones that otherwise look very similar to the naked eye, and that alone makes them incredibly valuable, especially for anyone who regularly works with colored gemstones and needs a quick way to spot inconsistencies.

I primarily work with jadeite, and while no filter can definitively confirm authenticity, this jadeite filter is very useful for quickly identifying stones that don’t behave like genuine jadeite should, which helps me focus my attention on pieces that are actually worth further testing, and in that sense, it’s an extremely practical tool that complements other methods rather than replacing them.

One of the biggest advantages of this bundle is portability because I can literally keep it in my pocket and use it anywhere, whether I’m at a market, a shop, or even just looking at a collection, and despite how small and simple it is, it adds a lot of value by giving me quick visual clues about the stones I’m examining, which is exactly what I need in real-world situations.

Perfect for quick screening, not guessing

Posted by Brian Cole on 4th Apr 2026

I don’t rely on any single test to identify a gemstone, but this filter set is perfect for quick screening because it helps narrow things down very quickly, and when you’re dealing with a large number of stones, that efficiency really matters, and I’ve found that using both filters together gives a better picture than using just one alone, especially when comparing multiple pieces side by side.

Very helpful learning tool for beginners

Posted by Alex Nguyen on 4th Apr 2026

As someone who is still learning about gemstones, I found this filter set to be extremely helpful because it allows me to actually see how different stones react under filtered light rather than just reading about it, and that hands-on experience has made it much easier to understand concepts like how certain elements affect color, and overall it has made learning gemology much more interactive and enjoyable.

Great for spotting treated or synthetic stones

Posted by Kevin Brooks on 4th Apr 2026

What impressed me most about this set is how useful it is for spotting stones that have been treated or are synthetic, especially when combined with a loupe and basic knowledge, because when certain stones suddenly show strong red responses through the Chelsea filter, it can indicate the presence of chromium or artificial treatments, which is exactly the kind of quick insight I’m looking for before making a decision, and while I always follow up with more reliable tests, this is an excellent first step.

Small tool, huge advantage at trade shows

Posted by Michael Thompson on 4th Apr 2026

I attend a lot of trade shows and estate sales where decisions need to be made quickly, and this filter set gives me a huge advantage because I can instantly check multiple stones under proper lighting and see if anything behaves differently than expected, which is often a red flag worth investigating further, and because these filters are so compact and easy to carry, they fit perfectly into my workflow without slowing me down, and over time they’ve saved me from making a few purchases I probably would have regretted.

Must-have for anyone buying jade or colored stonesMust-have for anyone buying jade or colored stones

Posted by Daniel Carter on 4th Apr 2026

I’ve been dealing with jade and colored stones for a few years now, and one of the biggest challenges is quickly filtering out questionable pieces when you’re in the field, and this little bundle has become one of my go-to tools because it allows me to do exactly that without carrying a full lab setup, and while I fully understand that filters are not meant to give a final identification, they are incredibly useful for eliminating stones that clearly don’t match what they’re supposed to be, especially when you’re dealing with jadeite versus dyed or treated materials, and the Chelsea filter in particular is very helpful for spotting chromium-related color responses that you simply can’t see with the naked eye.

This Chelsea filter and Ruby filter bundle is so handy!

Posted by Unknown on 27th Mar 2013

I do not know where I would be if I had a poorly made Chelsea filter, I am very glad to have this one. The Ruby filter is also a useful tool, both help me to make sure that the jewelry I purchase and sell has legitimate gems. These are an amazing quality for the affordable price.
