The conoscope is a necessary tool for use with a polariscope. Our conoscope is a strain free glass ball held within a black plastic protective case with convenient handle. The conoscope is used for magnifying the view of the axis through a polariscope. The conoscope allows you to see 2-d representation of the 3-d interference of the axis within the gem. The axis and its visual image is also called the interference figure. Conoscopes are also called interference spheres or interference balls.

Helpful Addition to My Gemology Toolkit
I had been studying gemology for about a year before deciding to add an interference sphere to my equipment. After using this one for several months, I wish I had purchased it sooner. The optical quality is very good and the sphere produces clean interference patterns when used with my polariscope. It has helped me better understand optic character and improve my confidence when identifying unfamiliar specimens. For students and hobbyists looking to expand their testing capabilities, this is an affordable and worthwhile investment.
